Can You Cast a Spell on Me? Only Good Spells
The other morning, I was climbing down into the pool when someone called out to me.
“Have you done anything witchy lately?”
“Yes, of course,” I laughed.
Then came the follow-up.
“Can you cast a spell on me?”
A beat.
“Only good spells.”
I laughed again, but the conversation stayed with me.
Because I get versions of this question more often than you might imagine.
Can you do something for me?
Can you shift this?
Can you help me bring something in?
Can you make something happen?
And underneath the playfulness, I think there is something deeply human going on.
Why Do We Want a Spell?
Perhaps because there are moments in life when we want to believe something can change. We want movement where things have become stuck. We want possibility when we can’t yet see the way through. We want to mark the moment when we decide: something needs to be different.
Humans have been working with ritual, symbolism and magic for thousands of years.
We have lit fires and candles.
Carried stones and amulets.
Spoken prayers.
Made offerings.
Drawn symbols.
Gathered at thresholds, seasons and celestial events.
We have always created ways of making the invisible visible.
Of taking an intention, a longing, a prayer or a decision and giving it form.
I think that’s part of what ritual does.
What Is the Purpose of a Spell?
This is important to me.
I don’t want someone believing that I possess some mysterious power that can override their life while they wait for something to happen.
That isn’t how I understand magic.
For me, ritual is participatory.
You bring something to it.
Your intention.
Your attention.
Your willingness.
And, importantly, your action.
Intention + attention + action.
That’s where it becomes interesting.
A candle can represent abundance.
A crystal grid can hold an intention.
A sigil can give symbolic form to something you have chosen.
A spell can mark a threshold.
But then you have to participate.
You make the phone call.
You have the conversation.
You send the proposal.
You change the boundary.
You ask for what you need.
You say no.
You say yes.
You take the next step.
The ritual doesn’t replace your agency.
It can help you remember it.
Why Does Ritual Still Matter?
We live in a world that prizes logic, productivity and measurable outcomes.
And I value all of those things.
I love strategy.
I love asking, What are we actually going to do?
But human beings aren’t purely intellectual creatures.
Sometimes knowing something isn’t enough.
We need to feel the shift.
We need an embodied marker that says:
This is what I am choosing now.
That is why I still work with candles, crystals, sigils, sacred geometry and ritual alongside mentoring, strategy and practical action.
Not because one replaces the other.
Because they speak to different parts of us.
There is the part that understands.
And there is the part that needs to experience.
Can a Spell Help You Change?
Maybe.
But probably not in the way you think.
I don’t want to give you a spell that asks you to hand your power over to me.
I’d much rather create something that brings you back to yourself.
Something that helps you name what you want.
Notice what you’re ready to leave behind.
Choose what you’re willing to do differently.
And then participate in what happens next.
Perhaps that’s the real magic.
Not controlling what happens. Not demanding that the universe deliver exactly what we ordered. But becoming conscious participants in our own lives.
So when someone asks me:
“Can you cast a spell on me?”
I understand the question differently now.
Maybe what they’re really asking is:
Can something change?
Is there another possibility?
Can I begin again?
And perhaps the best spell doesn’t give you something you don’t have.
Perhaps it reminds you of the power you already do.
